We stand in solidarity with the members of the LGBTQ community, and their families, friends and allies in condemning this weekend’s crime of hate and intolerance in Orlando.
It is never right to condemn or punish all members of a community for the actions of one or a small group of people. ISIS does not represent Muslims, and is certainly not the sole purveyor of violence and hatred toward LGBTQ people. To use this heinous attack as an excuse for more policies targeting the Muslim community will not further the cause of justice, or promote the safety of anyone. It both obscures and excuses the underlying problem of homophobia in our society, while promoting and exacerbating Islamophobia.
As an organization dedicated to fulfilling the Bill of Rights for everyone, we stand firm and unyielding against both homophobia and Islamophobia. You cannot fight prejudice and bigotry with more prejudice and bigotry.
