Tonight, the Berkeley City Council will decide whether to approve secret agreements between BPD and external law enforcement agencies including the NCRIC (Northern California Regional Intelligence Center) and UASI (Urban Areas Security Initiative). The City Council should refuse.
Police body worn cameras (BWCs) are perceived to deter police misconduct and force departments to be more transparent. Unfortunately, while police BWCs may have their uses, they are also tools that expand the reach of the surveillance state. BORDC/DDF is working to highlight these concerns, and ensure comprehensive guidelines are in place to protect civil liberties wherever body cameras are in use.
