This clip from Democracy Now! illustrates why government infiltration of peaceful activist groups is so dangerous, and debunks the common refrain “if you’re not doing anything wrong, you don’t have anything to worry about.” It turns out that the Army was leading a spy ring, infiltrating and attempting to disrupt peace and anarchist groups in the Pacific Northwest. John Towery, a member of the Force Protection Service at nearby Fort Lewis, who the activists knew as John Jacob, shared information about the activists and their protest plans with law enforcement agencies around the state and the country. This led to countless traffic stops and arrests for minor infractions, and Towery’s work even included an attempt to entrap Glen Crespo and his friends in a felony.
