The hateful rhetoric and fear-mongering has reached toxic levels here in Washington and around the country, as politicians on both sides of the aisle seek to score political points by promoting legislation and policies that trample due process and the First and Fourth Amendments.
As Congress careens towards a long summer recess, members are trying to ram through bills that scapegoat Muslims, expand the PATRIOT Act, and legitimize the terror watch lists.
Very few members are willing to stand up for the Constitution and the rule of law. It’s all about politics in this election year. So, we need to use our political power to hold them to account. Please send an email to your Senators and Representative now.
But I don’t want to leave you in distress! We do have a number of victories to celebrate, including the 50th anniversary of the Freedom of Information Act, the passage of a strong surveillance oversight and transparency bill in Santa Clara County, CA that can serve as a model for other localities, the defeat of a dangerous Computer Fraud Act clone in Rhode Island, and the (temporary) defeat of the bill to expand the PATRIOT Act.
As always, we are in awe of the grassroots activists we are so fortunate to work with. This month, we’re pleased to bestow our Patriot Award on Manzoor Cheema who is organizing against racism and Islamophobia in North Carolina.
Stay loud, stay strong
