Last week, we wrote to warning that Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) was trying to get the lame duck Congress to sneak the odious Israel Anti-Boycott Act into the must-pass end of the year budget.
Thank you if you took action, but unfortunately, the situation has just gotten even more urgent. And we need you to take action yet again.
The Israel Anti-Boycott Act was one of two federal bills aimed at silencing supporters of Palestinian human rights we’ve been fighting this legislative session. The other was the cynically named Anti-Semitism Awareness Act, which would force the Department of Education to adopt a definition of anti-semitism that conflates criticism of Israel with anti-semitism. This would mean student activism for Palestinian rights could be treated as a violation of federal civil rights law.
This bill’s sponsor, Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), is following in Cardin’s footsteps and has announced he will try to get the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act language into the budget.
Anti-semitism is deplorable. And people should be aware of it. But this bill isn’t about combating anti-semitism, it’s about perverting federal civil rights law to silence supporters of Palestinian civil rights.
